I wrote recently about the need for governments to focus on specific new markets to create ecosystems of excellence instead of trying to mimic Silicon Valley. The post was titled "Are VCs bad for UK's economic future?"

So it's slightly ironic that I was reading a post by Marc Andreesen (a leading VC) and he was, rather more eloquently, arguing precisely the same point.

In short, each community needs to look to it's existing skill set and advantages. To "focus" on technology nowadays is more like staring at the sky.
